Stress & Body

No one wants to have too much stress, but it definitely happens. We simply experience so much during our daily lives that the tension builds up. Stress is something you notice when your body feels sensations.

One example is when your whole head turns red while you’re talking to someone; out of the blue, it happens suddenly, it just comes over you. Another example is when you stiffen inwardly when someone says something to you. In Somatic Experiencing we call these types of sensation an activation in your body. They seem inconceivable, because the person you were speaking to hadn’t said anything annoying. These are just two everyday examples – and, later, when you’re sitting comfortably on the couch at home, you can wonder to yourself just exactly what happened.

There are, of course, also pleasant sensations, e.g. if you just passed an exam. That experience is often a celebration.
